Platform, module and role: three decisions in one request
An ERP request usually hides three decisions. Which platform, which modules and which role. A consultant for one finance platform is not interchangeable with a consultant for another, even when the job title matches. Within a platform, general ledger, payables, procurement, inventory, projects and consolidation are separate bodies of knowledge. Then there is the role: build, configure, migrate, support or train.
Write all three down before we start. If you do not know the platform because you are still selecting one, say that, since a selection adviser is a different person from an implementer. If you are mid way through a project, name the platform, the modules live and the ones outstanding.
We cover finance platforms, human capital platforms, customer platforms and planning systems. A person who knows one family rarely knows all of them, and a brief that names the exact system gets better profiles.
Consultant, analyst or administrator
A consultant designs and configures. They sit with finance or operations, hear how work happens and translate it into settings, workflows and reports. A financial systems analyst does a quieter version of this inside a company, maintaining and improving a platform over time. An administrator keeps a system running day to day: users, roles, fields, small changes.
The wrong choice is common. Companies hire an administrator to lead a migration and are surprised when design decisions stall. Others hire a consultant for routine maintenance and pay for skill that sits idle.
A business analyst or user acceptance lead is a separate need again. They translate between people and the system team and make sure testing is real. If your project is failing at the handoff between departments, look there before adding another configurator.
Technical differences that change who fits
Construction and project based businesses use job costing, retainage, subcontractor compliance and progress billing, and a general finance consultant may never have configured these. Manufacturers need inventory costing, bills of material and shop floor links. Services firms need time, expense and project revenue. The industry language matters as much as the product.
Version and edition matter too. Experience with an older on premise release does not guarantee comfort with a cloud release, and the reverse is also true. Integration experience is its own skill: connecting payroll, banking, expense and customer systems without duplicating or losing records.
Planning and consolidation tools are different from transactional systems. Someone who builds models in a planning tool needs finance understanding as well as software skill.
Where we find them and what we check
We draw on independent consultants, former implementation partners' staff who now work on their own, and in house systems leads between roles. Each has a different strength. Independents are flexible and direct. Former partner staff know methodology. In house leads know what happens after go live.
We screen with evidence of delivery. Which modules did they configure, what was the cutover like, what broke, how was it fixed? We ask about data migration, testing and user training, because projects fail in those places. We ask them to explain a design choice to a non technical person.
We also check that they will document their work. A configuration that lives only in one person's memory leaves you exposed the day they leave.
What ERP work depends on
Systems work depends on the business agreeing how it operates. If finance, operations and sales disagree on a process, a consultant cannot settle it by configuration. Someone with authority has to decide, and the brief should say who.
It depends on clean data. Migrating messy vendor, customer and item records into a new system multiplies the mess. It depends on people having time for testing, which is often the first thing squeezed. And it depends on the project manager, if there is one, keeping scope under control.
Tell us who owns decisions, who owns data and who will test. These answers tell candidates whether the project is realistic.
Briefing mistakes specific to systems
The usual mistake is a vague request such as ERP person. Others are naming no modules, ignoring integration points, and not saying whether the work is design, build or rescue. Another is expecting a single consultant to cover finance, procurement, inventory and reporting at an expert level.
A project rescue needs a different temperament. Candidates who enjoy greenfield builds may not enjoy untangling someone else's configuration. Say if you are in recovery mode, and be frank about what went wrong.
Finally, say what happens after the consultant leaves. Who supports the system? Who knows how to change it? If nobody, plan for training and documentation from the start.
Questions
How do you start an ERP search?
We confirm your specific platform, modules, and business needs before reaching out to anyone. You then review several vetted options to decide if you want to proceed.
When are fees charged?
There is no fee to start or review candidates. Payment terms only begin once you choose to engage a person we present.
What if no candidates match?
If you engage nobody we present, you owe nothing. We will discuss the feedback to adjust your requirements before proceeding further.
Can I keep my request confidential?
Yes, we handle searches discreetly based on your instructions. We agree on what information is shared and with whom before discussing your company.
Do you approach currently employed people?
Yes, we contact professionals who are active in their current roles as well as independent contractors. We verify their actual interest and availability before introducing them.
What replacement terms apply?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
How are recruiting fees agreed?
No upfront fee. You pay only if you engage someone we present. We scope the assignment before quoting; the fee page explains our model.
How soon can we see options?
Availability depends on the assignment and the people who fit it. We qualify interest and commitments rather than promising a shortlist date before the search is scoped.
What if the scope grows?
Discuss new responsibilities before adding them to the engagement. Agree the priorities and record any change to the brief and terms.
Can we extend an engagement?
Discuss what remains unfinished and whether the same responsibility is still needed. Extensions depend on the person's commitments and the agreed engagement terms.
Can the appointment become permanent?
A permanent move can be discussed if both sides want it. Review the future role and the applicable agreement instead of assuming that temporary coverage automatically converts.
How is a confidential search handled?
Tell us what can be disclosed and whom we must not contact. We agree those boundaries before approaching people; do not send sensitive records with an initial brief.
What are the replacement terms?
We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.
What do you not do?
We do not sell job-board reposting as a search or bill hourly for recruiting work. We do not take a retainer unless expressly agreed, and an introduction does not authorize an engagement.
Tell us the seat
No upfront fee. You pay only if you hire. Share the title, the situation and the timing. A person reads it.
