Executive roles above this family

Three disciplines, three different searches

This family combines planning and analysis, audit and control, and tax. They sit close together in a finance organization and are frequently grouped in requests, but the people are different. A planning professional builds forecasts, models and management reporting. An audit professional tests whether controls and records can be relied on. A tax professional handles filings, provisions and positions with authorities.

Decide which discipline you need before anything else. If you tell us you need a finance person for the audit, we need to know whether you mean someone to prepare for the external audit, someone to run internal audit, or someone to support an investigation. Each leads to a different pool.

Many requests span two disciplines, such as forecasting for a lender and control testing for an investor. Splitting them lets us find strong people in each instead of a compromise who is average at both.

Manager or analyst

An interim FP&A manager owns the planning cycle, the relationship with business leaders and the reports the owner relies on. A contract financial analyst or modeler builds specific outputs under direction. The manager shapes what is asked. The analyst answers it.

If your planning is weak because nobody is accountable for it, you need the manager. If you have a clear question, such as a model for a financing or a pricing study, an analyst or financial modeler can deliver it. A modeler in particular should be able to explain the assumptions and leave a structure others can use.

Reporting accountants sit between finance and external reporting. They prepare statements, disclosures and supporting schedules. They are different from analysts and need a formal accounting background.

Technical differences in audit and control

Internal audit, IT audit, SOX analysis and forensic accounting are separate fields. Internal auditors plan and perform reviews of processes and report to a committee or senior leader. IT auditors examine access, change management and system controls. SOX analysts document and test controls for public company reporting. Forensic accountants investigate suspected misstatement or misconduct and need discipline about evidence and confidentiality.

These differences matter because an excellent internal auditor may not know system controls, and a forensic specialist may have little patience for routine testing. State the framework you use, the scale of the organization and who the work reports to.

Independence is an important point. An auditor who reports to the person being reviewed cannot do the job properly. Tell us the reporting line you intend, and we will look at candidates comfortable with it.

Tax: provision, compliance and indirect

Tax is not one skill. Income tax compliance prepares returns and supports estimates. Tax provision calculates the tax expense and deferred balances in the financial statements. Sales and use tax deals with taxability, exemption and filings across jurisdictions. A tax manager reviews and decides positions.

Choose by the problem. A backlog of returns needs a preparer. An audit by an authority needs someone who can handle correspondence and support positions. A new state registration needs an indirect specialist. A change in structure needs a person who can advise, not only prepare.

Name the entity types and the jurisdictions involved. These facts decide whether a candidate has relevant experience, and they change the pool more than the title does.

How we screen and who we look at

For analysts and modelers we draw on contract finance professionals and people between permanent roles. For managers we look at former planning leads, controllers who built planning functions and finance leaders who stepped back from larger roles. For audit and tax we consider public accounting alumni, in house specialists and independent practitioners.

We screen with work samples described in conversation, not just resumes. We ask how a model was built and checked, what a finding looked like and how it was reported, how a tax position was supported. We look for people who can explain their work to someone who does not share their training.

We also check that they are comfortable with your tools and your reporting line. You see several options and make the choice.

Dependencies and common briefing mistakes

These functions depend on accounting operations for clean data, on business leaders for assumptions and on the owner or board for decisions. Planning without access to operating leaders produces numbers nobody believes. Audit without access to records produces nothing. Tax without complete books produces estimates.

The common mistakes are mixing disciplines in one title, omitting reporting lines, failing to name tools, and asking for analysis without saying what decision it supports. Another is asking for an auditor who is also a friendly adviser, two jobs that conflict.

Write the question the work must answer. Write who will read it. If you can do those two things, the rest of the brief follows, and the candidates we present will make more sense to you.

Questions

How do you distinguish between planning and accounting roles?

Planning roles focus on forward-looking models and management reports. Accounting roles prioritize historical data, regulatory filings, and financial statements.

Can I request someone for a project-based audit?

Yes, we source specialists for specific internal or IT audits. Define the specific control framework and reporting requirements in your brief.

How do you handle different tax jurisdictions?

We identify candidates based on their specific experience with your required state or entity types. Please clarify the geographic scope when submitting your request.

What documentation should I provide for an FP&A request?

Include the primary business decisions the analysis supports and your reporting structure. Specify the tools the person must use to access your data.

Are candidates available for both interim and contract roles?

Yes, we present professionals for various durations based on your immediate needs. You review options and decide the scope for each individual.

What replacement terms apply?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

How are recruiting fees agreed?

No upfront fee. You pay only if you engage someone we present. We scope the assignment before quoting; the fee page explains our model.

How soon can we see options?

Availability depends on the assignment and the people who fit it. We qualify interest and commitments rather than promising a shortlist date before the search is scoped.

What if the scope grows?

Discuss new responsibilities before adding them to the engagement. Agree the priorities and record any change to the brief and terms.

Can we extend an engagement?

Discuss what remains unfinished and whether the same responsibility is still needed. Extensions depend on the person's commitments and the agreed engagement terms.

Can the appointment become permanent?

A permanent move can be discussed if both sides want it. Review the future role and the applicable agreement instead of assuming that temporary coverage automatically converts.

How is a confidential search handled?

Tell us what can be disclosed and whom we must not contact. We agree those boundaries before approaching people; do not send sensitive records with an initial brief.

What are the replacement terms?

We offer a candidate replacement guarantee on standard search agreements. The applicable period and exact terms are set out in the signed client recruiting agreement.

What do you not do?

We do not sell job-board reposting as a search or bill hourly for recruiting work. We do not take a retainer unless expressly agreed, and an introduction does not authorize an engagement.
